Voices of ScotlandAs beautiful as it is mysterious, the music of Scotland is both unique and distinctive, characterized by dramatic walls of sound contrasted with plaintive melodies. The earliest works we will hear are those of Robert Carver and date from the early 16th century. His Missa “Dum sacrum mysterium” may have been sung at the Coronation Mass of slain King James IV’s infant son. O bone Jesu is a monumental 19-part motet thought to have been sung for the private prayers of King James IV at the Royal Chapel. Among modern Scottish composers, the most prominent is James MacMillan, who has written operas, concertos, and other works for the concert hall. Several of his sacred works will be heard in this concert including excerpts from the Westminster Mass, the mystical Christus Vincit, and the haunting A Child’s Prayer.
